Dennis Danner, Danner Studios - Wildlife Sculpture - About The Artist - Dennis began his development as a sculptor in 1982 when he started carving and painting realistic wildfowl. And, what began as a hobby grew into a demanding career when he chose to devote his full-time to sculpting in 1989. As he perfected his woodcarving skills, Dennis found it often useful to sketch his compositions in clay before rendering them in wood. He also began using metal sculpture techniques to enable him to present his subjects in a greater variety of habitat settings. The artist makes all his own molds, does his own casting, and hand paints, signs and numbers each piece. A close eye for detail, extensive use of reference material, and a biologist's familiarity with his subject are what characterize a Danner sculpture. See Labrador Puppies. Greg Pontius Wood Sculptor, widely known for Sea Life Sculptures - Moving to Hawaii in January of 1977 and realizing the wealth of locally grown hardwoods, he focussed his talents on wood sculptures. Greg collects his wood himself, believing, it is one of the most important parts of the project. He says, " I feel like a miner looking for a gem." He is widely known for his Sea Life Sculptures, whales of all kinds (mostly humpbacks), some as large as seven feet, many with calf or in arrangements with dolphins. He also creates jewelry boxes in the form of whales, eels or turtles, at first they appear to be pure sculpture, then, surprise, they open up with trays and even small drawers. In the past years Greg has made hundreds of small to large, unique, one of a kind boxes, from an almost endless variety of woods. Many of Greg's new pieces are inspired by the patron and he finds it exciting to work together to bring form to an idea. See his Showcase, note Mango Wood Dog with hidden drawer. Snow Dog Festival (Inukko Matsuri) The Snow Dog Festival originated in the early Edo era when the feudal lord of Yuzawa subdued a band of robbers, and has been celebrated for 360 years toward off evil and misfortune. Miniature shrines made of snow are built, a little dog made of "mochi" sticky rice cake is enshrined and candles are lighted. The outdoor dog sculptures and snow shrines glimmer in the candlelight, creating an aura of mystery and wonder. (the 3rd Sat. and Sun. of February, Yuzawa)
