- The City of Temple, Texas is located in Central Texas west of Fort Hood Army Base in Killeen, Texas. Within the City of Temple you will find many Veterans as the City is served by the Olin E. Teague Veterans' Center, part of the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System - all these facilities assist and administer to our Veterans. In addition to the many services offered to Veterans in Temple, the City is fortunate to have three Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts (Post 10377, 1820 and 4008). It is not uncommon in this City to see Veterans as part of the cityscape. Some of which have very visible injuries - others are a part of the crowd with a history unknown. The commonality of seeing such high numbers of Veterans in our City's population certainly makes one think of how war touches our hearts and minds - even if we have never had a first hand encounter with official war. This City's population often encounters persons who have recently served in the service or spouses of those currently in service seeking employment and/or a home within the City of Temple - this is due to the City's proximity to Fort Hood Army Base. However, this Memorial should serve all military branches and all wars equally.

The Review Committee is searching for an outdoor sculpture piece that would honor all veterans of all wars that have developed the history of Pike County, Missouri and the United States. Deadline for call is March 22, 2002. Send materials to: Janet Couch, War Memorial Review, Henry Lay Sculpture Park, 17405 Hwy UU, Louisiana Missouri, 63353. Any questions can be sent to Nanette E. Boileau, Director of the Saint Louis University Museum of Art, boilean2@slu.edu, 314-977-3398 or Janet Couch, hlay@nemonet.com, 573-754-6641
- HLSP is located in Pike County, Missouri, about five miles southwest of the Town of Louisiana. Adjacent to HLSP, and included within the over 300 acre multi-use project operated by Saint Louis University, is the McElwee Cemetery. James McElwee, a Revolutionary War Hero, was buried here in 1834. During the 1775 to 1781 period of that war, McElwee served in many different units of the Continental Army . While serving as a scout under Captain Byers of the Continental Army, McElwee was taken prisoner by the British on March 3, 1779. He and 28 others were taken to Savannah and spent the next eight months on a prison ship called the "Manificense." McElwee and his family came to Pike County, Missouri in 1832. After floating their covered wagons and oxen across the Mississippi , McElwee established his homestead on 165 acres of the present day HLSP. Pike County was established in 1818--three years before the State of Missouri was admitted to statehood. Pike County and its residents have had a long-standing history of participation in the wars of United States of America.

Boileau, Director of the Saint Louis University Museum of Art, boilean2@slu.edu, 314-977-3398 or Janet L. Couch, hlay@nemonet.com, 573-754-6641.

- HLSP is located in Pike County, Missouri, about five miles southwest of the Town of Louisiana. Located within the over 300 acre multi-use project operated by Saint Louis University, is a 10 acre man-made lake, with a peninsula on the west side of the lake that is approximately 50’x 100’. On the east side of the lake, directly opposite from the peninsula is a small island. The original plan for the layout of HLSP contemplated a sculpture on the island that would be representative of Eastern Civilization and a sculpture on the peninsula that would be representative of the new Western Civilization in North America. The peninsula is presently the site of "Three Sisters", a bronze sculpture by Bing Cheng. "Three Sisters" was designed to reflect a Miao ethnic group, located in the Southwest part of China. The piece depicts three Miao sisters in traditional costumes used to express their happiness in times of celebration.

- The most successful design concept, as defined by the Sponsor, will be the submittal that evokes the strongest emotional response, the deepest sense of contemplation, and the most respectful mood of remembrance from the visitor. Key to these results is a monument environment which is dramatic yet timeless; has a symbolic connection to land, sea and air thus reflecting the environment in which service personnel serve; and has a strong thematic impact to reinforce the reality that the ultimate price is extremely high for those who serve in uniform to defend our county and its ideals. The design program is very flexible to allow maximum creative freedom.

- Mar 21, 2001: On behalf of Envision East Lansing, I am pleased to request a proposal for a collection of permanent, outdoor sculptures that will be the defining elements in our proposed Children’s Sculpture Garden. Sculptures should be of permanent material (bronze, stone, etc.). Color and lighting effects will be considered. The site of the Children’s Sculpture Garden will be an urban plaza in the center of downtown East Lansing. The plaza is slated to be redeveloped this spring. It will include a fountain, outdoor seating and a stage. The plaza layout, planters, seating, and fountain are being designed by others, but your suggestions on integration of the art with the landscape and site elements is encouraged. The Children’s Sculpture Garden will significantly enhance the function and aesthetic beauty of the downtown. It should certainly have a whimsical character and should also employ a theme that fits East Lansing. The proposed theme of the sculpture garden is Muses, but there are opportunities for great latitude in expression of the theme. The garden’s primary audience should be children, but it should invoke the muse in all of us. It should inspire us to pursue arts and sciences and it should free the child inside of us. Instructions: Interested artists should send 6 slides of existing work, a one-page abstract including optional sketches of the proposed project, budget up to $80,000 and a resume. Send materials or questions to: Lori VanOmmeren, Department of Planning and Community Development, 410 Abbott Road, East Lansing, MI 48823 e-mail: lvanomm@ci.east-lansing.mi.us Proposals must be received by April 20, 2001. National, regional and local artists working in any appropriate art medium are eligible to apply for any of the four proposed art locations near the four main entrances to the new stadium. A public information meeting for potential artists will be held on February 12, 2000, followed by an application deadline of April 7, 2000. - "Any medium that meets criteria for permanence, durability, weather resistance, and public safety will be considered for each of the proposed sites." "Artists working in any appropriate medium are eligible to apply for any or all of the four (4) proposed art projects. Separate applications (form reproduction accepted) and sets of slides must be submitted for each project."
- Suggested themes for each of the sites are as follows:
- Sports Legends Mall (Site A) – This site landmark is being created to celebrate the ideals/principles of sport and the historical presence of the Denver Broncos football team in this community. The presence (feel) of the space should exploit this important vista and have monumentality suitable for the primary entrance leading to the stadium. The Sports Legend Mall’s year round atmosphere should be one of pageantry and celebration.
- Counties Gateway Plaza (Site B) – This site will serve as a tribute to the six counties that make up the stadium district. The plaza should serve as a place to recognize the strong history and diversity of each county, its respective cities and its residents. Each of the six counties will have a large 40 ft pillar, constructed of concrete that rises from the ground (three on each side of the plaza) as visitors approach the facility. Additionally, fans will be able to purchase numerous sized brick pavers that will be placed in the plaza to mark this special place.
- North Entry Plaza Park (Site C) – This site serves as a buffer to the neighborhoods to the north with the establishment of a small park like setting. A simple grass area, lined by trees as visitors approach the facility, highlights the north end.
- Platte River Park (Site D) – This non-programmed park space links the stadium to the Central Platte Valley park system and is highlighted by a formal formation of trees that establish a European-style park. Visitors will pass through the park as they approach the east entrance of the facility from the new Bronco Bridge."

- Jan 21, 2001: To Whom It May Concern, We are 7th-graders at a middle school in a Chicago suburb. Our class is planning the design and eventual construction of a school statue. The statue will be of a wildcat (our school mascot) wearing a toga, standing upright, and holding up a globe in one hand. Is it possible that you could help us by recommending good materials to use, possibly help us design and/or build it, or recommend someone in our area who could help? We’d also really appreciate an estimate of the cost of building this. Some miscellaneous information you might want to know is as follows: The statue will be about six feet tall, three feet wide, and three feet long, possibly as large as seven by five by five - somewhere in that general area. The statue will be inside our school, and in a place that we don’t have to worry about damage by weather or students. The statue will probably be made out of aluminum, with a base of granite and an armature of some other metal. If you think you can help us in any way, please e-mail us at GWMS_Statue@yahoo.com . Thanks, Ms. Burnell’s 7th-grade Cross- Curricular Studies Class. Glenn Westlake Middle School.

I am compiling a file to draw on for possible future shows, seminars and conferences. Please feel free to contact me via E-mail at epaker@home.com or by telephone (619) 589-6959 after 5pm pacific time. If you happen to be in California, there is a conference on 9 September in Oceanside at Mission San Luis Rey Retreat Center, I will be happy to pass on that info also. [Note that the National Dyslexia Research Foundation does not seem to have a website yet. I put some links to dyslexia resources at Dyslexia for anyone interested in the topic. -Richard Collins] - Aug 17, 2000: Gallery Ultima - Seeking sculptors for 20 yr. old gallery.
