- Patrick J. McGowan,
Sculptor Patrick's forte is sculpted portraits. His faculty for capturing
the essence of the subject's countenance is such that one feels the portrait is
going to speak. Other works in the contemporary, the whimsical and the
representational, reveal a sagacious observer of human nature whose sculptures
establish an immediate association with its viewers. See: Portraiture, Contemporary, Whimsical, Representational, Sculpture Demo

- Elan
Vital, Maui - Artist Profile - Élan's first major work here was to make the largest sculpture in Hawaii-a 49
foot long, 10 ton, lifesize, humpback whale and donate this to establish Ecology
Park in Kihei, Maui where it is now on permanent, prominent display. After
completing this true to life monumental sculpture Élan turned his attention to
expanding the scope of Hawaii's art scene by successfully introducing cutting
edge art. Over the past five years, Élan Vital has sold more original oil
paintings than any other artist in the Hawaiian islands. When asked why, Élan
Vital replied, "My patrons tell me it's the beauty of the lifeforce within that
lifts their spirits and makes them want to share their home with it ." Élan
specializes in commissions to monumental scale in painting and sculpture. See: The

statue wins Pomaika'i Award The Princess Ka‘iulani Statue and Park were one
of a record 118 entries in the 2000 Keep It Hawai‘i program sponsored by the
Hawai‘i Visitors & Convention Bureau. It was for generosity such as this and
other deeds that the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts was honored by the bureau with
a special Pomaika‘i Award as “a business that brings good fortune.” The
Kelley family commissioned sculptor Jan Gordon Fisher to create the
8-foot work of art, which weighs 800 pounds. The princess wears a Victorian
dress with a peacock (pikake in Hawaiian) at her feet. She was called the
“Peacock Princess” for the flocks of the fanciful birds that roamed her estate.

- 'Ele'ele School - Library - As part of the
State Foundation of Culture and the Arts program, the library was fortunate to
receive two distinguished pieces of art. The exterior wall features Satoru
Abe's copper and bronze sculpture "Boulders, Salt Ponds, and Taro Fields"
(1979). The interior of the library is brightened by the strikingly colorful
artwork of Carol Yotsuda and the Youth of Kauai. Two large panels of
venetian tile mosaic depict scenes from early Hawaiian life and are entitled
"Loa'a Ka Nani Ma Ka "Aina A Me Ka Mo'e" or Beauty is Found in the Land and the
People" (1981).
