Surface Digitizing, 3D Digitizing
- Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology : Surface Imaging of the
Human Body "An optical surface scanner was used to digitize and model an
adult female torso to demonstrate the feasibility of whole body 3D surface
anthropometry. This 3D surface scanner employs structured light and has an
acquisition time of less than one second for a 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 meter sample
volume."
- The Challenge of 3D
Digitizing by Terry Wohlers " it's easy to get excited about 3D
digitizing. After all, it's a technology that promises to do away with the need
to laboriously re-create by hand the 3D data of an existing object. Instead, you
just take the physical object, scan it, and voila, you instantly have a complete
3D model ready to be edited and modified in your CAD system. Unfortunately, it's
really not that simple, and before you let your plans for using 3D digitizing
get too ambitious, it's important to understand the technology's
limitations."
- HYMARC 3-D Vision
Systems "Hymarc's primary product, the Hyscan 45, is a high
performance 3D scanning laser digitizer which rapidly acquires precise XYZ data
points from any object. Hyscan systems map surface information in a
continuous high speed non-contact fashion with ± 0.001" (± 0.025mm) ±3 sigma
accuracy, which satisfies demanding applications such as reverse engineering,
design, rapid prototyping and inspection. The Hyscan laser digitizer is designed
to fit to any Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), Computer Numerically
Controlled (CNC) Machine, or other translation device. The integrated design
yields a powerful, yet user friendly, system which can be quickly and easily
interchanged with existing probes or tools.

- "Hymarc has opened an international 3D Multimedia Services Division at the Canadian Museum of Civilization to provide museums worldwide with 3D digitizing, 3D virtual reality (VR)
content, turnkey 3D VR systems, museum
websites, interactive visitor kiosks, digitally accurate object replication services and other
multimedia services.
- Hymarc will be presenting museum VR content in partnership with Silicon
Graphics at the American
Association of Museums 94th Annual Meeting and MuseumExpo99 in Cleveland,
April 25-29, 1999."

- Center for Medical
Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery, Carnegie Mellon University "Medical
robotics spans broad areas of science and engineering to realize intelligent
machines for clinical practice. Robotic technologies can improve existing
medical practice as well as provide innovative new approaches to current
problems. A new breed of computer-based devices presents medicine with new tools
that can do much to augment physicians' skills." MRCAS

- ENTEC's Laser Digitizing Service for Reverse
Engineering "Reverse engineering is the rising star of rapid product
development. The need to capture undocumented three dimensional geometry quickly
has never been more important. ENTEC's Laser Digitizing Service meets this
challenge. Virtually any three dimensional object can be scanned. Digitized data
is processed with Datasculpt software and is typically exported to any CAD
system as IGES entity #106 - 3D Polyline."
