Bion - By Adam Brown

This interactive installation explores the relationship between human beings and artificial life. The name "Bion" references an individual component of primordial energy, first identified by scientist Wilhelm Reich. The work comprises one thousand glowing, chirping sculptural forms. Each bion, measuring approximately 4 x 3 x 2 ½ inches, is a synthetic life-form with its own audio speaker, blue lights (LED’s), and multiple sensors. They are suspended by fine gage wire connected to panels that are attached to the ceiling. When installed, the panels form clusters of bions arranged at different elevations. Every bion has the ability to communicate with the others and with viewers that enter the space.

In the tradition of Japanese superstition, this figure-8, a symbol of financial growth and success, is displayed on the grounds of a tax office. Embodying order and balance in its careful geometric design, “Wa” may not help ease the mind of the financially troubled, but it nevertheless stands as a striking work of art.

Desert Light - By Gordon Huether

With its dynamic form and jutting glass panels, Gordon Huether’s “Desert Light” draws both the viewer and the environment into its colorful layers. Incorporating light and scenery with more traditional elements of glass and metal, Huether creates a truly interactive sculpture. Never static, “Desert Light” is different from every angle depending on the time of day or setting in which it is placed. At twelve feet high and five feet wide, this work showcases Huether’s background in public art as well as his mastery of scale and material.

Appassionata - By Candace Knapp

The musical term that informs a musician to play passionately, “Appassionata” simultaneously evokes the stance of a human figure, a wild animal and an intangible force.  At over seven and a half feet tall, Knapp’s work appears to be waving its curling arms, its movements slowly transforming from intended to involuntary in the same way one changes as he is mentally and physically carried away by the music.

Faeries in Waiting - By Paula Slater

Paula Slater’s whimsical “Faeries in Waiting” depicts a young faerie woman walking dreamily over a pond of water lilies. Wings spread, arms outstretched and toes pointed, she is trailed closely by two tiny faerie accomplices who loyally hold the train of her iridescent gown. Cast in bronze, this work has been finished with a “fancy” patina, a combination of sheer and opaque colors highlighted with polished jewels. This beautifully detailed piece provides a glimpse into Slater’s unique, fantastic world.

This symbolic portal invites the viewer to explore notions of place and time, its archway suggesting entrance into a new world. Inspired by the Japanese tea ceremony, which requires one to stoop through a small opening to enter the ceremonial room, “Heart Stone” also calls the participant to leave everyday life behind and enter a space where perceptions take on a new set of meanings.

Royal Butterfly Trainer - By Paula Slater

A young faerie man skillfully guides a gilded butterfly through his golden hoop in Paula Slater’s “The Butterfly Trainer.” The faerie’s voluminous wings help keep him afloat as he stands gracefully perched atop a stone. This sculpture reflects Slater’s high attention to detail- even the veins on the backs of the subject’s hands and feet are visible! “The Butterfly Trainer” captures the delicate movement of a single instant, leaving the viewer hard pressed to decide if it is faeries or butterflies who have the most beautiful wings.
